Coast Guard intercepts $20M of cocaine and marijuana

The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has announced the successful interception of over $20 million worth of cocaine and marijuana from drug traffickers. On Wednesday, approximately 2,220 pounds of cocaine and 3,320 pounds of marijuana were offloaded at Coast Guard Base Miami Beach, according to a media release from the agency.

Cmdr. Brian Gismervik, commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Northland, emphasized the collaborative nature of these efforts, stating that stopping harmful narcotics requires teamwork among various organizations, including the Department of Defense (DoD), Department of Homeland Security (DHS), and international partners. The operation is framed as a response to the challenges posed by transnational criminal organizations.

The drug seizure resulted from four distinct encounters in the Caribbean Sea and involved cooperation from the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Netherlands Navy, and the U.S. Navy. The USCG shared images and video footage of the offloading process, illustrating the drugs packaged in black plastic wrap.

While the Coast Guard has detailed the quantities and values of the intercepted substances, no information has been released regarding the suspects involved in these drug trafficking operations. The agency continues to operate in a “dynamic maritime environment,” highlighting the importance of international collaboration in combating drug smuggling.

This seizure is part of ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to disrupt the flow of illegal drugs into the United States and protect communities from the associated harms. The Coast Guard's role in these operations underscores its commitment to maritime security and law enforcement in the region.
