Cloudflare outage affects ChatGPT, X, and other internet services

Cloudflare, a major internet infrastructure provider, has addressed a recent issue that caused outages affecting various platforms, including the social media site X, ChatGPT, and several multiplayer games. The company, headquartered in San Francisco, confirmed on its status page that it was aware of the disruptions and was investigating the matter earlier on Tuesday.

By 9:42 a.m. ET, Cloudflare announced that it had implemented a fix and believed the incident to be resolved, although they continued to monitor the situation for any residual errors. The company's Chief Technology Officer, Dane Knecht, acknowledged the failure to meet customer expectations but clarified that the issue was not related to a cyberattack.

The outages resulted in widespread reports of 500 errors, impacting the ability of users to access platforms like Canva, Grindr, and ChatGPT. Reports of issues peaked at nearly 5,000 before decreasing to around 600 by 8 a.m. ET, according to outage-tracking site Downdetector.

To address the problem, Cloudflare temporarily disabled certain services for users in the United Kingdom and noted that unusual traffic was detected on one of its services. The company had also scheduled maintenance for its data center in Santiago, Chile, on the same day.

Cloudflare plans to release a detailed analysis of the incident later. The situation has reignited discussions among cybersecurity experts about the risks associated with reliance on a small number of large tech companies for internet infrastructure. A spokesperson from Cloudflare has been contacted for further comments.
