A 26-year-old man, Luigi Mangione, has been identified as a "strong person of interest" in the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in New York City. Mangione, who was found in possession of a gun similar to the one used in the shooting, was arrested on a gun charge in Altoona, Pennsylvania, but has not been charged in connection with Thompson's killing.
Mangione, a Towson, Maryland native with ties to San Francisco, was found with a silencer, a mask, and fake identification. Police believe he may have ill will towards corporate America. His LinkedIn profile indicates a background in engineering and computer science, with degrees from the University of Pennsylvania.
The development in the case came on the same day as Thompson's funeral in Minnesota. New York police are en route to Altoona to question Mangione. The NYPD credited his arrest to surveillance photos released following Thompson's killing.
Thompson, the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, was shot from behind while entering an investor meeting in Manhattan. The suspect fled on a bike and into Central Park before taking a taxi to Washington Heights.
The investigation is ongoing, with police working to determine if Mangione is the same person seen in surveillance footage. UnitedHealth Group, the parent company of UnitedHealthcare, is the largest private payer of health insurance benefits in the U.S.
Mayor Eric Adams stated that they have a strong person of interest in custody, matching the description and possessing items connecting him to the incident. Police are continuing to gather evidence and information in this case.
