Ahmed al Ahmed, who disarmed one of the alleged shooters during a mass shooting at Bondi Beach, received a $1.65 million check on Friday following a crowdfunding campaign that garnered substantial support. His actions during the incident, described as the worst mass shooting in Australia in over three decades, involved confronting a gunman and successfully wresting away the firearm while sustaining injuries from gunfire. Ahmed is currently recovering in a hospital after undergoing surgery.
The fundraising effort, co-organized by social media influencer Zachery Dereniowski, attracted donations from various individuals, including billionaire hedge fund manager Bill Ackman, who contributed nearly $67,000 and promoted the campaign on social media. In a message to his donors, Ahmed emphasized the importance of unity and compassion among people.
At 43, Ahmed has lived in Australia for about 20 years after leaving Syria’s Idlib province in search of work. His uncle, Mohammed al Ahmed, expressed pride in his nephew's bravery, highlighting the recognition Ahmed has received both locally and internationally. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and New South Wales Premier Chris Minns visited Ahmed in the hospital to commend his actions, with Albanese labeling him an “Australian hero.”
The tragic shooting resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals, including a 10-year-old girl and two rabbis, as gunfire erupted during celebrations for Hanukkah. The suspected perpetrators are a father-son duo, with the father killed by police and the son critically injured. The incident has prompted widespread discussions about safety and the importance of community solidarity in the face of violence.
