Berlin Pride Attack Leaves One Dead and Dozens Injured
German authorities said police shot and killed the suspect in Saturday’s deadly attack near Berlin Pride after a nearly daylong manhunt. The suspect, identified as 21-year-old German citizen Abdul Ballout, allegedly drove a white minivan into pedestrians near Tiergarten, killing one woman and injuring at least 29 people. Eleven victims reportedly suffered serious or life-threatening injuries.
The attack occurred around 10 p.m. as hundreds of thousands attended Christopher Street Day events. Police said the driver crashed into a tree, exited the vehicle and may have attacked additional people with a stabbing weapon before fleeing. Scheduled festivities were canceled. Officials said security barriers and extensive police staffing had been arranged for the event.
Authorities searched transportation hubs, airports and border areas before locating Ballout on Sunday. Berlin Police said he approached emergency personnel with a stabbing weapon at about 6 p.m., prompting officers to open fire. Attempts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful.
Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt said available evidence indicated an Islamist extremist motive, although investigators had not established whether Ballout acted alone. Prosecutors said he had previous assault and robbery convictions and had drawn authorities’ attention over alleged radicalization and Islamic State propaganda. He had also traveled to Lebanon, where he reportedly tried to contact ISIS and was imprisoned.
According to prosecutors, Ballout received a 22-month sentence in May 2026, but was released under probation supervision while the court considered suspending the sentence. A July 3 search connected to a suspected weapons violation found only a toy gun.
Germany remained at a high terrorism threat level following the attack. Federal intelligence reporting has warned of a continuing Islamist terrorism risk and extremist hostility toward LGBTQ+ communities. Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Berlin Mayor Kai Wegner condemned the violence, expressed support for victims and urged national unity and continued public vigilance nationwide.
