AOC and many House Democrats oppose resolution condemning Kirk's assassination

The U.S. House of Representatives passed a resolution introduced by House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) honoring conservative commentator Charlie Kirk and condemning all forms of political violence. The resolution received bipartisan support, passing with a vote of 310-58. Among those voting in favor were all Republicans and 95 Democrats, while 58 Democrats opposed it and 38 voted present.

The resolution specifically honors Kirk’s contributions to civil discourse and his commitment to American values, urging all citizens to reject political violence and engage in respectful debate. In his remarks, Johnson emphasized Kirk's approach to political discourse, highlighting his ability to foster friendships regardless of political competition.

Notable Democrats who voted against the resolution included Representatives Jasmine Crockett, Pramila Jayapal, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, and Ilhan Omar. During the floor debate, Ocasio-Cortez criticized Kirk's political views, describing them as divisive and harmful, while asserting that it is possible to condemn violence without endorsing Kirk's ideology.

Earlier in the year, the House passed a separate resolution unanimously condemning the assassination of Democratic Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband. In a related development, the Senate recently passed a resolution recognizing October 14 as the "National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk," which was done unanimously and serves a ceremonial purpose without legal authority.

A memorial service for Kirk is scheduled for Sunday in Glendale, Arizona, featuring remarks from several prominent figures, including President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.
