A school shooting in Oregon killed several children and an adult

Four Killed in Shooting at Bend Elementary School

At least four people, including three children and one adult, were killed in a shooting Thursday afternoon at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, according to CBS News. The suspected gunman also died. Authorities had not established a final count of those injured or killed.

The shooting began outside the school, where the suspect fired into a car before entering the building, according to a Bend police official. Police received the first report at 12:59 p.m. and began receiving calls from inside the school about a minute later, Bend Police Department communications manager Sheila Miller told local reporters. Officers arrived at 1:02 p.m., and the suspect was down seconds later, she said.

CBS News, citing unnamed sources, reported that the shooter was a teenager and was killed by a bystander. Police said the suspect died inside the school but had not publicly confirmed who killed the suspect. Details about the sequence of events inside the building and the identities of those who died were not immediately available.

Miller said several people, including children, were taken to a local hospital for treatment. Authorities had not released a complete accounting of the injured. FBI Director Kash Patel said federal agents were at the scene and that the bureau would provide resources to investigators. Local police asked the public to stay away from the area while the response continued.

Officials were arranging a reunification center at a nearby church for families seeking information about students. Silver Rail is a public elementary school serving children from kindergarten through fifth grade and has 438 students. Bend, in central Oregon, has a population of nearly 100,000 and is about a three-hour drive from Portland. Miller offered condolences to the community as officials continued gathering information. Authorities had not yet said when they would provide an updated victim count or further details about the investigation.
