As Los Angeles County continues to battle devastating wildfires, officials announced that at least 36 people remain missing and the death toll has risen to 25. Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna stated that search and rescue teams found two additional deceased individuals in the Eaton Fire and Palisades Fire areas. Luna also mentioned that more remains are expected to be discovered in these areas, and evacuation orders are still in place.
In total, 43 missing persons were reported in the county, with 12 found safe and 31 remaining active cases. Of these, 24 are in the Eaton Fire area and seven in the Palisades. Additionally, Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell reported eight missing persons in the city, with three believed to be deceased.
The Eaton Fire has burned around 14,117 acres and is 55% contained, while the Palisades Fire has consumed approximately 23,713 acres and is 22% contained. Thousands of fire personnel are working tirelessly to combat the fires, with progress being made as strong winds weaken.
Officials warned of potential future weather threats, including strong Santa Ana winds expected to arrive in the coming days. Los Angeles Fire Department Chief Kristin Crowley advised residents to plan, prepare, and stay aware to protect themselves and their families.
Looking ahead, officials cautioned that a window for rain later this month could bring mudslides and debris flows to the areas affected by the wildfires. The situation remains dynamic, and residents are encouraged to stay informed and follow safety guidelines.
