Secret Service officer accidentally shoots self while on duty

A Secret Service Uniformed Division officer suffered a non-life-threatening self-inflicted injury on duty on Saturday due to the negligent discharge of a service weapon, according to a spokesperson for the division. Initial media reports suggested it was a special agent, but this was later clarified.

The injured officer was evaluated at a nearby hospital, with no reported injuries to others. The Secret Service's Office of Professional Responsibility will be reviewing the incident.

Special agents, responsible for protecting top U.S. and visiting officials, focus on security and investigations, while uniformed officers protect facilities and venues. The incident comes at a sensitive time for the Secret Service, which has faced scrutiny for recent assassination attempts on former President Donald Trump.

In July, a gunman targeted Trump at a rally in Pennsylvania, grazing his ear and killing an attendee. More recently, an armed suspect was accused of planning to assassinate the former president at his golf course.
