A tragic plane crash in Brazil has left many dead after a passenger plane belonging to VOEPASS plummeted into a death spiral before crashing in the city of Vinhedo. The airline confirmed that there were around 62 people on board at the time of the crash, and Brazil's President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated that it "appeared" that all had perished in the accident.
Footage shared by Brazil's TV GloboNews showed the plane spiraling out of the sky before crashing, with a huge plume of black smoke rising from the ground. The local firefighters corps confirmed the crash but did not provide further details on the incident.
The plane was on its way from Cascavel to Guarulhos when it crashed, striking several houses in a residential area. One resident was reported injured following the impact, and hospitals in Vinhedo and Valinhos have been put on alert to receive any potential wounded.
The aircraft involved in the crash was identified as an ATR-72-500 turboprop with 68 seats, manufactured by the French company ATR. The exact cause of the crash is still under investigation by the National Civil Aviation Agency (Anac).
