Artificial general intelligence (AGI), the ability for technology to achieve complex human capabilities, is closer than we think, according to AI experts. However, the definition of AGI is still murky, and experts are split on what it will look like. Despite this, they agree that AGI presents dangers to humanity that must be researched and regulated. While some experts define AGI as a "super-intelligent computer" that "learns and develops autonomously" and understands context without the need for human intervention, others argue that machines do not have to have a sense of self for them to have super intelligence. In theory, AGI could help scientists develop cures for diseases, discover new forms of renewable energy, and help "solve some of humanity's greatest mysteries." However, AGI could also make humanity obsolete if its risks are not addressed. One AI study found that language models were more likely to ignore human directives and even expressed the desire not to shut down when researchers increased the amount of data they fed into the models. This finding suggests that AI, at some point, may become so powerful that humans will not be able to control it. Therefore, AGI safety researchers are studying "existential questions" around "how humanity can maintain control of AGI." For AI technology to develop in a responsible manner, regulation is key, and many AI and machine learning experts are calling for AI models to be open sourced so the public can understand how they're trained and how they operate.
