Walmart has recalled nearly 4.5 million Expert Grill grill-cleaning brushes after concerns that their metal bristles could detach and end up in food. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission announced the recall on October 1, warning that swallowed bristles could cause internal injuries requiring surgery.

The recall covers five products sold at Walmart stores and online, including Walmart.com. Prices ranged from $1 to $28. Some affected brushes were sold beginning in January 2021, so shoppers may have purchased them several years ago. Officials say no incidents or injuries have been reported in connection with the products.

The recalled items include handheld grill brushes, long-handled brushes with scrapers, a three-head stainless steel bristle brush and a 10-piece barbecue tool set. They were marketed under Walmart’s Expert Grill brand. The brushes have black plastic or stainless steel handles; some include attached metal scrapers. Buyers can check the model numbers in the CPSC’s recall notice to determine whether their product is affected.

The risk arises when wire bristles break loose during cleaning and remain on a grill surface. They can then stick to food without being noticed. The agency advises consumers to stop using the recalled brushes. Walmart is offering a full refund or store credit, including credit for purchases on Walmart.com. Customers will be asked to return the brushes or dispose of them.

The products were manufactured in China and imported by Walmart, which is based in Bentonville, Arkansas. Consumers seeking more information can visit Walmart’s product recall website or call 800-925-6278 between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Central Time, Monday through Friday. Walmart did not immediately respond to a request for comment from FOX Business.

People who own an Expert Grill brush should compare its model number with the notice before using it again and follow Walmart’s refund instructions if affected.
