Plant-based diet may reduce snoring

A recent study published in ERJ Open Research suggests that individuals who follow a healthy, plant-based diet may be less likely to experience obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and snoring. The study found that those who consumed a diet high in vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and nuts had a 19% lower risk of OSA compared to those with diets lower in plant-based foods. Additionally, individuals following a largely vegetarian diet also showed a reduced risk of OSA.

Experts believe that the anti-inflammatory and weight-reducing properties of healthy plant-based foods may contribute to the decreased risk of snoring and OSA. In contrast, individuals who consumed an unhealthy plant-based diet high in refined carbohydrates, sugary drinks, and high-sugar and high-salt foods were shown to have a higher risk of OSA.

It is important to note that while plant-based diets have been associated with various health benefits, more research is needed to determine if a healthy meat-based diet could have a similar impact on OSA. Sleep scientist Dan Gartenberg suggests that the nutrient-dense and anti-inflammatory nature of plant-based foods may help reduce inflammation and promote a healthy weight, ultimately decreasing the factors that contribute to airway obstruction during sleep.

In addition to dietary changes, experts recommend sleeping on your side, using nasal strips, addressing allergens in your sleeping environment, and avoiding smoking to help reduce snoring. If snoring persists and disrupts your sleep, it is advised to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying health issues.

Overall, making healthy food choices and leading an active lifestyle can have a positive impact on your overall health and well-being. While the study suggests that plant-based diets may be beneficial in reducing snoring and OSA, further research is necessary to fully understand the relationship between diet and these sleep disorders.
