A recent study has provided important insights into the relationship between coffee consumption and cardiovascular disease mortality in people with severe hypertension. The study, published in the Journal of the American Heart Association, found that drinking two or more cups of coffee a day was associated with double the risk of death from cardiovascular disease than those who didn’t drink coffee. However, drinking just one cup of coffee a day was not associated with an increased risk. In contrast, green tea was not associated with an increased risk of mortality across any blood pressure categories.

These findings suggest that people with severe hypertension should be mindful of the amount of coffee they consume. While there may be some health benefits associated with drinking coffee, the risks associated with drinking too much can outweigh any potential benefits. As such, it is recommended that people with severe hypertension limit their coffee consumption to just one cup per day and consider switching to green tea, which does not have the same adverse health effects.
