Bodum Recalls 5.9 Million French Press Coffee Makers Over Burn Risk
Bodum USA has recalled about 5.9 million French press coffee makers after reports that their glass carafes broke during use, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. The recall, issued October 29, 2026, covers 8-cup and 12-cup models with replaceable glass carafes. Breakage can expose users to hot coffee and cause burns.
The commission said a carafe may break unexpectedly if its glass is damaged or cracked. Using a metal spoon to stir coffee inside the carafe is one way the glass may be damaged. Bodum has received 70 reports of carafes breaking during use; 48 of those reports included burns to consumers.
Consumers should immediately stop using metal spoons or other metal utensils to stir coffee in the glass carafes, the commission said. They should contact Bodum to obtain a plastic stirring spoon and a warning label. The recall notice identifies the Bodum name on the frame and inner lid of most affected models, as well as engraved on the glass carafes. Images accompanying the notice show Brazil, Kenya and Chambord models.
The coffee makers were sold from 1974 through October 2026 for approximately $15 to $65. Retailers included Target, Walmart, coffee shops and home goods stores nationwide. They were also available through Amazon, Target and Walmart websites and other online sellers.
In a statement, Bodum said the rate of reported breakage incidents during use was extremely low relative to the millions of French presses it has sold in the United States over several decades. The company said the recall would further encourage safe use. The commission’s advice focuses on avoiding metal utensils in the carafe and obtaining the plastic spoon and warning label; it does not direct consumers to stop using every affected coffee maker. Consumers who own a Bodum French press can check its identifying markings against the recall information.
