In a world filled with various products claiming to detoxify the lungs, it is important to approach these claims with skepticism. According to Dr. Joshua Englert, a pulmonologist at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, there is no scientific evidence to support the use of these products. While the idea of cleansing the lungs may be appealing, it is crucial to save your money as these products are not backed by research.

Fortunately, our lungs have the ability to clean and repair themselves under certain circumstances. For instance, if you are suffering from an acute illness such as pneumonia or acute bronchitis, your lungs will likely fully recover, as explained by Dr. Norman Edelman, a professor of medicine at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. However, chronic damage, such as that caused by long-term smoking, is more difficult for the lungs to repair.

Smoking leads to two types of long-term damage to the lungs: emphysema and chronic bronchitis, collectively known as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Emphysema destroys the air sacs responsible for oxygen exchange, while chronic bronchitis causes inflammation in the airways leading to the air sacs. Unfortunately, once the air sacs are destroyed, they cannot be replaced. However, quitting smoking can still have significant benefits. Studies have shown that the risk of COPD and lung cancer decreases over time after quitting smoking, with the risk dropping to nonsmoking levels after several decades of abstinence.

To protect your lungs and minimize further damage, it is important to avoid secondhand smoke and vaping. Breathing in the toxic chemicals present in cigarette smoke can lead to various health issues, including lung cancer and stroke. Additionally, steam therapy has not been shown to improve lung function.

Preventing infections, avoiding pollution, following a diet rich in antioxidants, and engaging in regular exercise can also contribute to maintaining healthy lungs. Vaccinations, hand hygiene, and staying away from individuals with respiratory illnesses can help prevent infections. Testing your home for radon and using HEPA filters can reduce exposure to lung-cancer-causing toxins. Consuming fruits and vegetables high in antioxidants, such as leafy greens and berries, may provide some protection against damage caused by smoking and air pollution. Finally, cardiovascular exercise can improve lung function and overall health.

While the idea of detoxifying the lungs may be enticing, it is important to rely on scientifically-backed methods to maintain and improve lung health. Quitting smoking, avoiding secondhand smoke, and taking preventive measures against infections are the most effective ways to protect your lungs.
