Researchers at Aberystwyth University are developing home-based lateral flow tests for early detection of breast cancer and conditions like endometriosis and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Professor Luis Mur leads the project, stating that urine samples can reveal significant changes indicating breast cancer with high accuracy. The aim is to create a prototype kit within a year, allowing patients to test at home or visit their GP. This initiative is part of a broader investment by the Welsh government, which has allocated £75 million to women's health research.

Dr. Helen Munro, clinical lead for women's health in Wales, highlighted the goal of expediting the implementation of research findings into clinical practice, noting that it currently takes an average of 17 years for research evidence to be utilized. The 10-year women’s health plan, published in December 2024, aims to establish women's health hubs in each health board across Wales. These hubs are intended to provide accessible services tailored to their communities.

In west and mid Wales, the Hywel Dda health board has organized seven GP clusters to enhance women's health services. Local GPs are being trained in menopause and contraceptive care, which aims to reduce the number of referrals to secondary care and improve access to timely treatment. Dr. Lauren Thomas explained that this initiative would help alleviate long wait times for women experiencing pelvic pain or conditions like endometriosis.

Minister for women's health, Sarah Murphy MS, acknowledged the varying starting points of each health board and emphasized the importance of evaluating progress and sharing successful practices across Wales as the initiative unfolds.
