The National Health Service (NHS) in the UK is set to expand access to weight-loss medications, specifically Wegovy and Mounjaro, to help millions manage obesity-related health issues. Wegovy, which is already available in some regions, is a weekly injectable medication that suppresses appetite by mimicking the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). Mounjaro, which also targets glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), is expected to be introduced by March 2025.

Currently, Wegovy is prescribed primarily to adults with a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 or over, along with a weight-related health condition. A maximum two-year prescription is recommended, complemented by diet and exercise programs. The anticipated rollout of Mounjaro will initially mirror this eligibility, with a broader release planned for June 2025, potentially benefiting about 3.4 million individuals.

Both medications have demonstrated significant weight loss in clinical trials, with Wegovy users losing over 10% of body weight and Mounjaro users potentially losing up to 20% when combined with lifestyle modifications. However, health experts caution that weight can be regained after discontinuation of the drugs, emphasizing the importance of sustained lifestyle changes.

In addition to NHS availability, Wegovy and Mounjaro can be purchased privately, with costs ranging between £200 and £300 per injection. The NHS is implementing stricter regulations to prevent misuse, particularly through unregulated online sources. Common side effects include gastrointestinal issues, with more severe complications possible from misuse.

With obesity affecting approximately one in four adults in the UK, the introduction of these medications represents a significant public health initiative aimed at addressing a growing health crisis.
