A recent study published in Nature Health has highlighted several previously overlooked side effects associated with GLP-1 medications, including popular drugs like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Mounjaro. The research utilized self-reported data from approximately 410,198 Reddit posts, identifying 67,008 users who reported their experiences with these medications. Notably, 43.5% of these users mentioned at least one side effect.
While common side effects such as nausea, fatigue, constipation, and diarrhea are well-documented, the study brought attention to less recognized symptoms, including chills, hot flashes, and menstrual irregularities. Dr. Jeffrey Lee, a plastic surgeon and expert in the field, noted that although gastrointestinal issues are the most frequently reported side effects, some patients have also experienced fatigue and other symptoms. However, he emphasized that the clinical significance of these hidden side effects remains uncertain.
The study suggests that GLP-1 medications may influence not only the gastrointestinal system but also the brain, particularly areas that regulate hormones, temperature, and appetite. This systemic effect could explain the broader range of symptoms reported by users. Dr. Lee pointed out that while some patients have noted a diminished sense of reward from certain behaviors, including a decrease in urges related to alcohol consumption, this may also lead to feelings of apathy or decreased libido.
Despite the insights gained from the study, Dr. Lee cautioned against drawing definitive conclusions based on self-reported data from social media, which can often lack context. He acknowledged the importance of further research to validate these findings and better understand the potential effects of GLP-1 medications.
