While popular holiday drinks can be enjoyed, moderation is key. For instance, hot chocolate made with milk can provide some calcium, but the benefits may be offset by high sugar content, especially in store-bought options that can contain up to 30 grams per serving. Similarly, eggnog is calorie-dense due to its sugar and fat content, while beverages like mulled wine and flavored coffee drinks can also contribute significant amounts of sugar with minimal nutritional benefits.
To mitigate these risks, dietitians recommend limiting added sugars to about 6% of daily caloric intake, equivalent to 9 teaspoons for men and 6 for women, according to the American Heart Association. Healthier alternatives include making homemade hot chocolate with unsweetened cocoa and low-fat milk, or opting for herbal teas and fortified plant-based milks.
