A recent study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine and funded by Sanofi suggests that medications used to treat erectile dysfunction, known as PDE-5i medications (e.g. Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra), may have benefits beyond their intended use. According to the study, men who took PDE-5i medications for erectile dysfunction had a 13% lower rate of major adverse cardiovascular events, a 39% lower rate of death due to cardiovascular disease, and a 25% lower rate of death due to any cause compared to those who did not take the medications.
However, it is important to note that the study had several limitations that should be taken into account when interpreting the results. The study was not designed to show whether PDE-5i medications are the cause of the observed heart-related benefits, and researchers did not have data on the frequency of taking the medications or sexual activity.
The findings, while promising, suggest that further research is needed to investigate whether PDE-5i medications are indeed beneficial for heart health. Until then, it is important to speak with a healthcare provider before taking any medications to understand the risks and benefits.
