A recent study published in the journal Health Psychology indicates that consuming a consistent set of meals may lead to greater weight loss compared to a varied diet. The research involved 112 adults with overweight or obesity who participated in a structured 12-week behavioral weight loss program. Participants recorded their daily food intake using a mobile app and weighed themselves daily.
The study assessed two main factors: caloric stability, which measured daily calorie intake fluctuations, and dietary repetition, which tracked how often individuals consumed the same meals. The results showed that those who adhered to a routine lost an average of 5.9% of their body weight, while those with more diversity in their meals lost 4.3%.
Kristin Kirkpatrick, a registered dietitian not involved with the study, noted that while the findings highlight a potential correlation between meal consistency and weight loss, they do not establish a definitive cause-and-effect relationship. She emphasized the importance of nutrient-dense meals, as lacking essential nutrients could hinder weight loss efforts. Additionally, Kirkpatrick pointed out that achieving consistency in real-life situations can be challenging due to various factors like travel and stress.
The research also suggested that greater consistency in caloric intake correlates with more significant weight loss; for every 100-calorie increase in daily fluctuation, weight loss decreased by about 0.6%. David Cutler, a family medicine physician, supported the idea that limiting food choices to healthier options can assist in weight management.
Overall, the study proposes that simplifying meal choices could support sustainable, healthy eating habits, although individual responses to dietary changes may vary. Consulting a healthcare professional for personalized weight loss strategies is recommended.
