A recent study presented at the ACC Asia 2024 conference in New Delhi, India, suggests that consuming more than 400 milligrams of caffeine per day may increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. The study, which has not yet been published in a peer-reviewed journal, found that regular caffeine consumption can impact the autonomic nervous system, leading to elevated blood pressure and heart rates over time.

The researchers evaluated 92 participants between the ages of 18 and 45 who did not have elevated blood pressure. Those who consumed more than 400 mg of caffeine per day showed significantly higher heart rates and blood pressure after exercise compared to those who consumed less caffeine. The study also found that nearly 20% of the participants consumed more than 400 mg of caffeine daily, with the highest consumers being female, employed in business and management roles, and living in urban areas.

While moderate caffeine intake has been associated with reduced risks of heart failure, type 2 diabetes, and liver and endometrial cancers, excessive caffeine consumption can lead to short-term symptoms such as increased heart rate, irritability, anxiety, headache, and insomnia. Over the long term, it may contribute to hypertension and potentially bone loss.

To maintain a healthy blood pressure, individuals are advised to monitor their caffeine intake, engage in regular exercise, follow a balanced diet, reduce sodium intake, maintain a healthy weight, avoid tobacco, and limit alcohol consumption. It is essential for individuals to be aware of the amount of caffeine in the beverages they consume and to listen to their bodies in order to determine how caffeine affects them personally.
