Daily avocado and mango consumption may enhance blood pressure in prediabetes

Recent research from the Illinois Institute of Technology suggests that incorporating one avocado and one cup of mango into the daily diet may enhance heart health, particularly in individuals with prediabetes. The study indicates that this fruit combination can lead to improvements in blood vessel function and reductions in diastolic blood pressure within eight weeks.

The findings show that participants consuming the avocado-mango combination exhibited a notable increase in flow-mediated dilation, a measure of vascular health. Specifically, their flow-mediated dilation improved to 6.7%, compared to a decrease in the control group. Additionally, men in the fruit group experienced a reduction in diastolic blood pressure, while the control group saw an increase.

Experts attribute these benefits to the nutrients found in both fruits, including fiber, potassium, vitamin C, and healthy fats. Dietitian Karen E. Todd emphasized that while the results are promising, they should be viewed in the context of overall dietary patterns. Replacing lower-quality foods with nutrient-rich options like avocado and mango can contribute to better heart health over time.

Though the study highlights the potential benefits of consuming these two foods together, researchers caution against over-reliance on them as a singular solution for heart health. Limitations include a relatively small sample size and a brief study duration, which may affect the generalizability of the results.

To integrate mango and avocado into a balanced diet, they can be added to salads, yogurt bowls, or enjoyed as toppings for various dishes. Moderation is key, as both foods are calorie-dense. Overall, the research supports the idea that a diet rich in whole, minimally processed foods is essential for long-term cardiovascular health.
