Coffee's effects on gut and brain health discovered by scientists

Researchers at APC Microbiome Ireland, based at University College Cork, have made significant strides in understanding the health benefits of coffee, particularly its impact on the gut-brain axis, which connects the digestive system and the brain. This study, published in Nature Communications and backed by the Institute for Scientific Information on Coffee (ISIC), reveals that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee consumption can positively influence the gut microbiome, as well as mood and stress levels.

The study involved a comparison between 31 regular coffee drinkers and 31 non-drinkers, utilizing various biological and psychological assessments. Participants provided stool and urine samples and tracked their dietary habits, allowing researchers to analyze the gut microbiota's response to coffee. Initially, coffee drinkers abstained from coffee for two weeks, after which their mood and gut microbiota were monitored again during a controlled reintroduction of coffee.

Results indicated that both caffeinated and decaffeinated coffee led to improvements in mood, with reports of reduced stress, depression, and impulsivity. Notably, specific gut bacteria, such as Eggertella sp and Cryptobacterium curtum, were found to be more prevalent among coffee drinkers, suggesting a potential protective role in digestive health.

The study also differentiated the effects of caffeine and other compounds in coffee. Participants consuming decaffeinated coffee showed enhancements in learning and memory, implying that non-caffeine components may contribute to cognitive benefits. Conversely, caffeine intake was associated with reduced anxiety and improved attention.

Professor John Cryan, the study's corresponding author, emphasized the broader implications of these findings for understanding coffee's role in health, highlighting its complex interactions with gut microbes and overall well-being. The research suggests that coffee may serve as a valuable dietary component for promoting a healthier microbiome and mental health.
