Coffee may extend life, lower heart disease risk

A recent study published in the European Heart Journal suggests that the time of day you consume your coffee may impact your risk of mortality, particularly from cardiovascular disease. The study, led by Lu Qi, MD, PhD, from Tulane University, found that individuals who primarily consume coffee in the morning have a lower risk of all-cause mortality and cardiovascular disease-related death compared to non-coffee drinkers or those who drink coffee throughout the day.

The research, which involved over 40,000 adults from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and 1,463 adults from the Women’s and Men’s Lifestyle Validation Study, revealed that morning coffee drinkers had a 16% lower risk of all-cause mortality and a 31% lower risk of cardiovascular disease-related death compared to non-coffee drinkers. However, there was no reduction in mortality risk for those who drank coffee throughout the day.

The study also highlighted that the quantity of coffee consumed in the morning played a role in heart health, with moderate to heavy morning coffee drinkers experiencing greater reductions in disease-related death risk compared to light morning coffee drinkers.

Despite the promising findings, the study does have limitations. Morning coffee drinkers were predominantly white with higher family incomes, making it challenging to generalize the results to more diverse populations. Additionally, the study was observational and based on self-reported data, which may impact the validity of the findings.

While the mechanism behind the relationship between morning coffee consumption and mortality risk is still unclear, experts suggest that late consumption of coffee may disrupt sleep patterns and hormonal rhythms, potentially contributing to the observed benefits of morning coffee drinking.

Overall, the study provides valuable insights into the potential health benefits of consuming coffee in the morning and suggests that limiting coffee consumption in the afternoon and evening may be beneficial for overall health. However, more research is needed to fully understand the causality behind these findings and to make specific recommendations for coffee drinkers.
