Aerobic Exercise May Support Brain Health After Menopause
A recent study suggests that regular aerobic exercise may improve executive function in postmenopausal women, with measurable benefits emerging within three to six months. Published August 1 in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, the research examined whether structured exercise could help preserve cognitive abilities associated with planning, decision-making, organization, working memory, and independence.
The study included 93 cognitively healthy women ages 20 to 67 who had below-average cardiorespiratory fitness and did not exercise regularly. Participants were assigned to either a six-month aerobic exercise program or a stretching-and-toning program. The largest gains occurred among those completing 45 minutes of moderate aerobic activity four times weekly. Improvements appeared after three months and continued through the study.
Researchers and outside experts said aerobic activity may support cognition by improving cardiovascular fitness, cerebral blood flow, metabolic health, and brain plasticity. It may also reduce inflammation and vascular risk factors while supporting the hippocampus, white matter connections, and biological pathways involved in learning and neuronal survival. Short-term workouts may additionally produce immediate, temporary improvements in thinking.
The findings are relevant because women account for about two-thirds of Alzheimer’s disease cases, and cognitive complaints are more common after menopause. Declining estrogen levels may play a role, although aging and menopause are difficult to separate. The study’s analysis suggested that menopause-related differences were not explained by age alone.
However, the research was a secondary analysis of a relatively small sample, and experts cautioned that it does not establish that exercise prevents Alzheimer’s disease or slows dementia. Larger studies are needed to confirm the results, distinguish the effects of menopause from aging, and assess biomarkers such as amyloid and tau. For now, the findings identify aerobic exercise as a practical, accessible option for supporting general cognitive health, alongside established physical benefits, rather than as a proven dementia-prevention measure.
