Universal's latest release, "Wicked: For Good," has achieved significant box office success, grossing an estimated $150 million in its opening weekend in the U.S. This figures marks the second-highest debut for a film in 2025, trailing only Warner Bros.' "A Minecraft Movie," which earned $163 million in April. The new film's performance surpasses that of last year's "Wicked," which opened to $112.5 million.
In addition to its domestic success, "Wicked: For Good" is projected to amass around $226 million globally within its first three days of release. The film sold approximately 10 million tickets over the weekend, outpacing the 8 million sold during the opening of its predecessor. Notably, around 30% of domestic screenings took place in premium large format theaters, compared to 18% for the original film, which likely contributed to the box office boost. General ticket prices averaged $15.25, while premium tickets averaged $18.75.
Industry analysts, including Paul Dergarabedian from Comscore, credited Universal with effectively capitalizing on the success of the original film to achieve a larger debut for this installment. Looking ahead, "Wicked: For Good" is expected to maintain strong box office performance throughout the Thanksgiving holiday season, coinciding with other notable releases such as Disney's "Zootopia 2."
Last year's Thanksgiving box office set a record, bolstered by "Wicked" and other major titles. With strong audience demand anticipated for both "Wicked: For Good" and "Zootopia 2," the 2025 Thanksgiving box office may see similarly impressive figures, potentially challenging last year's achievements.
