Trump's Ticket Price-Gouging Order's effects on Concertgoers

President Trump signed an executive order aimed at addressing concerns over ticket price gouging for live events. This order mandates the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) to enforce price transparency throughout the ticket purchasing process. Additionally, it directs the Attorney General to ensure compliance with existing laws regarding ticket scalping, particularly targeting the use of automated bots that buy tickets in bulk to resell at inflated prices, thereby profiting scalpers at the expense of artists and fans.

During the signing ceremony, Trump highlighted the issue of high ticket prices, stating that the order represents a move towards more affordable options for concertgoers. Music artist Kid Rock, who attended the event, expressed his support for fair ticket pricing, noting the challenges artists face from scalpers who exploit pricing strategies.

This executive order follows previous actions taken by the Biden administration, which sued Ticketmaster over allegations of monopolistic practices in the live event industry. The discussion around ticket pricing has gained traction in recent years, particularly as reports indicate a significant increase in average ticket prices—from about $25 in 1996 to approximately $135 today, according to industry data.

Responses to the executive order have varied. Ticket reseller StubHub praised Trump’s initiative, viewing it as a step toward protecting fans. Conversely, Live Nation, Ticketmaster’s parent company, expressed support for resale reforms but did not endorse specific price caps, which were not included in the order. Industry analyst Bob Lefsetz criticized the executive order as largely symbolic, suggesting that it lacks substantial measures to enforce existing laws effectively, particularly given the historical challenges in funding enforcement initiatives.
