Tron: Ares earns $33.5 million in box office debut

This weekend, "Tron: Ares," the latest installment in Disney's sci-fi franchise, topped the box office with an estimated $33.5 million. However, this figure fell short of industry expectations, particularly given its reported production budget of around $150 million. The film features notable performances from Jared Leto, Greta Lee, and Jeff Bridges and follows a narrative centered on a conflict between two technology firms, Emcom and Dillinger, that face challenges related to a shared artificial intelligence.

Despite some positive reviews, including a three-star rating from The Associated Press, "Tron: Ares" did not replicate the financial success of its predecessor, "Tron: Legacy," which opened to $44 million in 2010 and ultimately grossed over $400 million worldwide. According to Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian, the franchise has struggled to achieve sustained popularity despite a dedicated cult following stemming from the original 1982 film. He noted that international box office performance could be crucial for the film's profitability.

In addition to "Tron: Ares," other new releases also faced challenges. "Roofman," starring Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst, debuted in second place with $8 million, while Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" came in third with $6.6 million. Family film "Gabby’s Dollhouse: The Movie" continued to perform well, earning $3.3 million, while the faith-based drama "Soul on Fire" opened with $3 million. The horror film "The Conjuring: Last Rites" added $2.9 million to its total.

Overall, the October box office, characterized as a transitional period between summer blockbusters and holiday offerings, saw varied performances across different genres and titles.
