TikTok launches Community Notes as a new fact-checking tool

TikTok has announced the official rollout of its new feature, TikTok Footnotes, which is designed to enhance content reliability on the platform. This feature, similar to the Community Notes introduced by other social media platforms such as X and Meta, allows selected users to contribute additional information or context to videos.

The pilot program for Footnotes is currently available to approximately 80,000 users in the United States. To qualify, users must be at least 18 years old, have maintained an active account for a minimum of six months, and have no community guideline violations within the past six months. Interested users can apply online to participate in the program.

Footnotes will begin to appear on videos over the coming weeks, with users able to rate these contributions. TikTok anticipates that as users become more familiar with the feature, the effectiveness of the system will improve through a learning algorithm. The platform has stated that the visibility of footnotes may initially be delayed as contributors adapt.

Moderation of the footnotes will involve both automated and human oversight, with users having the ability to report any footnotes they believe to be inaccurate or in violation of TikTok’s guidelines. TikTok asserts that Footnotes is part of its broader commitment to maintaining platform integrity, complementing existing measures like content labels and a global fact-checking initiative.

The introduction of Footnotes is part of a suite of features TikTok is launching, which also includes Discover & Learn tools, Family Pairing options, and enhancements aimed at supporting content creators.
