TikTok is now the leading social app for news among young people

TikTok has emerged as the leading social media platform for news consumption among young Americans, specifically those aged 18 to 29, according to recent survey data from the Pew Research Center. In a notable shift, 43% of respondents reported regularly obtaining news from TikTok, surpassing YouTube and Facebook, which each garnered 41%. Instagram follows with 40%, while X (formerly Twitter) and Reddit received 21% and 18%, respectively.

The survey indicates that social media is the predominant source of news for this age group, with 76% of young adults stating they often or sometimes receive news from these platforms. In contrast, only 60% reported using news websites, and just 28% indicated that they use email newsletters for news updates. Approximately half of the young adults surveyed expressed some level of trust in social media as a news source, which is comparable to their trust in national news organizations.

TikTok's rise in news consumption is further characterized by a preference for content that includes commentary from news influencers and user-generated videos related to current events, rather than traditional media outlets. This trend has led to the emergence of independent news influencers and creators, who are increasingly viewed as relatable sources of information.

In response to its growing role in news dissemination, TikTok has introduced features designed to enhance its news capabilities. These include tools for publishers to link articles within videos and a community fact-checking feature called footnotes. The platform collaborates with independent fact-checkers in over 130 markets to assess the accuracy of its content. This development reflects TikTok’s adaptation to the evolving landscape of news consumption among younger audiences.
