The 2025 Met Gala will celebrate Black dandyism

The 2025 Met Gala is set to take place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, with a theme titled “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style.” This year’s event will honor menswear and the cultural movement of Black dandyism, which has historical roots dating back to the 18th century.

Black dandyism is characterized not only by sharp dressing but also by a broader ethos of individuality and cultural expression. Historically, figures like Beau Brummell, considered the first dandy, influenced a shift in men’s fashion and grooming standards. In contrast, Black dandyism emerged as a response to societal marginalization, becoming a form of protest and cultural assertion, particularly during the post-Emancipation era and the Harlem Renaissance. Notable figures such as Langston Hughes and Cab Calloway played pivotal roles in shaping this movement, inspiring contemporary artists like André 3000.

The theme for this year’s Met Gala draws inspiration from Monica Miller’s book, "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity." The gala will also coincide with a Spring exhibition at the Costume Institute that examines the influence of style on the Black diaspora, marking a significant focus on menswear in the institute's history.

Co-chairs for this year’s event include Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, Pharrell Williams, and ASAP Rocky, all recognized for their contributions to high-fashion menswear. Attendees are encouraged to reflect their personal style while adhering to a "Tailored For You" dress code, which is expected to feature traditional menswear elements such as suits and accessories. The 2025 Met Gala promises to be a celebration of both fashion and cultural history, highlighting the significance of Black dandyism in contemporary society.
