Spotify paid over $100 million to podcasts in Q1

In a recent announcement, Spotify revealed it has allocated over $100 million to podcast creators globally in the first quarter of 2025. This amount encompasses a diverse range of podcasters and formats, highlighting the platform's commitment to content creators. Notable figures in the podcast realm, such as Joe Rogan, Alex Cooper, and Theo Von, were mentioned as significant contributors to this investment, having previously hosted some of the most popular podcasts on Spotify in 2024.

While Rogan and Cooper have concluded their exclusive agreements with Spotify, Rogan recently secured a new deal estimated at up to $250 million, which includes revenue sharing and the option to post content on YouTube. Conversely, Cooper transitioned to a $125 million deal with SiriusXM in August 2024.

Despite the end of exclusive contracts, former Spotify shows continue to be available on the platform, allowing them to participate in the newly launched Spotify Partner Program. Initiated in January 2025 in the U.S., U.K., Canada, and Australia, this program enables creators to generate revenue through ad monetization during their episodes and from dynamic ads viewed by Premium subscribers.

In contrast, Patreon reported disbursing approximately $472 million to podcasters from its 6.7 million paid memberships in 2024. While YouTube's financial support for creators is significantly higher—totaling $70 billion between 2021 and 2024, according to CEO Neal Mohan—this figure encompasses a wider array of content beyond podcasts.

Spotify's first-quarter earnings report is expected to provide further insights into the platform's financial health and ongoing investments in the podcasting sector.
