'Sonic 3' and 'Mufasa' compete for top spot at box office

The holiday box office was dominated by two family-friendly films this past week, with "Sonic the Hedgehog 3" narrowly edging out "Mufasa" in the three-day weekend earnings. Paramount's Sonic movie brought in $38 million, while Disney's "Mufasa" earned $37.1 million in the U.S. and Canada. However, when looking at the five-day earnings, "Mufasa" had the edge with $63.8 million.

Other films also made their mark at the box office, including the vampire horror film "Nosferatu," which debuted in third place with $21.2 million over the weekend and $40.3 million in its first five days. The film received positive reviews and set a record for the best Christmas Day opening ever for a genre film.

The Bob Dylan biopic "A Complete Unknown" had a strong start, earning $11.6 million over the weekend and $23.2 million since Christmas. The film has been well-received by critics and audiences alike and is expected to gain momentum during the awards season.

Nicole Kidman's "Babygirl" performed decently, earning $4.4 million over the weekend and $7.2 million since Christmas. The film, which follows Kidman as a CEO who begins an affair with a young intern, has garnered praise for Kidman's performance.

Despite strong reviews, "The Fire Inside" struggled at the box office, earning $4.3 million in total. The film, which played in 2006 theaters, failed to make a significant impact among moviegoers.

Thanksgiving releases like "Wicked" and "Moana 2" continued to perform well during the holiday season. "Wicked" earned $19.5 million, bringing its domestic total to $424.2 million, while "Moana 2" rounded out the top five films with $18.2 million in earnings. Both films have been successful both domestically and globally.
