Shedeur Sanders ranks in NFL's top 5 jersey sales even as a backup

Shedeur Sanders, currently the third-string quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, has maintained significant popularity despite not being a starting player. According to data from the NFL Players Association, Sanders ranked fifth in jersey sales from March 1 to July 31, 2025. This period saw Philadelphia Eagles running back Saquon Barkley and quarterback Jalen Hurts taking the top two spots for highest-selling jerseys, followed by Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels and reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen.

Sanders gained widespread recognition after a surprising drop to the fifth round in the NFL Draft, which contributed to his current prominence. He had a mixed preseason, showcasing potential in his first game but struggling in subsequent appearances. In his final preseason outing against the Los Angeles Rams, he completed three of six passes for a total of 14 yards, while facing significant pressure that resulted in five sacks.

Despite his challenges on the field, Sanders' jersey sales reflect his connection with fans. He is the only Browns player to break into the top 50 for jersey sales during this timeframe. Notably, his former Colorado teammate, Travis Hunter, who plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars, also appeared in the top rankings, coming in at 11th.

Sanders has yet to see regular-season action, serving as the emergency quarterback for the Browns in their opening game against the Cincinnati Bengals. His trajectory will be closely monitored as the season progresses, particularly to see if he can translate his popularity into on-field success.
