Paris Olympics medals contain original Eiffel Tower iron pieces

The 2024 Paris Olympics will feature a unique tribute to the host city with the medals awarded to athletes. The gold, silver, and bronze medals will contain iron from the iconic Eiffel Tower, adding a special touch to the prestigious awards.

Pieces of the Eiffel Tower's original iron frame, removed during renovations and modernization projects over the years, have been preserved by the operator of the historic site. French jeweler Chaumet took these leftover iron pieces and molded them into hexagon-shaped pieces to be placed in the center of each medal. This design is a nod to France's nickname of "l'Hexagone," highlighting the country's unique six-sided shape.

According to Chaumet's creative director, Clémentine Massonnat, the hexagon-shaped iron pieces were placed in the center of the medals as the most precious element, similar to a gemstone. The brackets holding the iron in place also mimic the design of the Eiffel Tower's rivets, tying the medals back to the iconic landmark.

The other side of the medals features depictions of both the Eiffel Tower and the Acropolis of Athens, along with Athena Nike, the Greek goddess of victory. These intricate designs add a touch of history and culture to the medals, reflecting the spirit of the Olympic Games.

Overall, the incorporation of iron from the Eiffel Tower into the medals adds a unique and meaningful element to the 2024 Paris Olympics. Spectators attending the games will also have the opportunity to enjoy views of the Eiffel Tower at the Eiffel Tower Stadium, a 12,860-person venue located at the base of the famous landmark.
