In a significant development for the film industry, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the introduction of a new award category for stunt design, set to be presented at the 100th Academy Awards in 2027. This decision aims to recognize the contributions of stunt professionals, who have historically received limited acknowledgment within the Academy's framework.
Academy CEO Bill Kramer and President Janet Yang highlighted the importance of stunt design in filmmaking, stating, “Since the early days of cinema, stunt design has been an integral part of filmmaking.” They expressed pride in honoring the work of these artists, emphasizing their innovative approaches and dedication to the craft.
While the Academy has yet to release specific eligibility criteria for the new category, it has confirmed that the details concerning the award’s presentation will be determined by its Board of Governors and executive leadership in the future. Currently, there are over 100 stunt workers who are members of the Academy’s Production and Technology Branch, yet only two honorary Oscars have been awarded to stunt performers in the past.
The establishment of this category may lead to increased recognition and emphasis on stunt work in film productions, potentially influencing how studios approach action sequences and set pieces. As the film landscape continues to evolve, the Academy's decision to formally incorporate stunt design into its awards framework marks a notable shift towards inclusivity and recognition of diverse contributions to the cinematic arts.
