OpenAI is reportedly planning to test ads in ChatGPT soon

OpenAI is reportedly exploring the integration of advertising into its ChatGPT platform as it prepares for the future. Insiders have indicated that this initiative is part of a broader commercial strategy outlined by Fidji Simo, OpenAI's CEO of applications. Simo recently detailed the company's research and development objectives in a Substack post, hinting at plans to pilot sponsored content within ChatGPT and internal chat models starting in the new year.

In the past, OpenAI has maintained a cautious stance regarding the introduction of public-facing advertisements. Despite the competitive pressure from rivals like Google and the existence of ad functionalities in development, OpenAI has faced backlash from users over perceived undisclosed advertisements in chatbot responses. This led to clarifications from the company that, while product suggestions may occur, there is currently no established advertising model.

In December, CEO Sam Altman communicated to employees that advertising plans were temporarily on hold as the company reassessed its priorities. This included delaying the launch of a new personalized assistant model. Nevertheless, OpenAI continues to pursue its advertising aspirations, viewing it as a potential source of funding and a practical application for the user data it has collected.

Recent reports suggest that employees have been testing various ad layouts and considering ways to introduce sponsored responses that would not alienate users. An OpenAI spokesperson emphasized the importance of maintaining the trust users have in ChatGPT as the company explores these new advertising avenues.
