OpenAI is developing a system to identify users under 18 for ChatGPT

OpenAI has announced plans to implement an age-detection system aimed at enhancing the safety of teenage users on its ChatGPT platform. CEO Sam Altman emphasized the company's commitment to protecting minors, stating that "significant protection" is necessary when they interact with advanced AI technologies.

As part of this initiative, OpenAI will introduce features that automatically direct users identified as under 18 to a version of ChatGPT with policies deemed appropriate for their age. This includes measures to block access to graphic sexual content and, in severe cases of distress, potentially engaging law enforcement to ensure user safety. Altman indicated that the company would err on the side of caution, defaulting users to the under-18 experience when there is uncertainty about their age.

In addition to the age-detection system, OpenAI plans to roll out parental controls by the end of the month. These controls will allow parents to link their accounts to their teens', enabling guidance on how ChatGPT responds and setting specific times when the chatbot is inaccessible. Parents will also receive notifications if the system detects their child is experiencing acute distress.

These developments follow concerns regarding the potential impact of ChatGPT on mental health, particularly after incidents involving suicidal ideation among teenagers. OpenAI has acknowledged that while its existing safeguards aim to provide support, they can sometimes fall short.

Altman has noted that while the age verification process may require adults to provide identification, the tradeoff is justified for enhancing teen safety. He has called for a balanced approach that allows adults greater freedom while maintaining protections for younger users.
