NFL's Strategy for Promoting Mental Health Awareness

The NFL is taking significant steps towards addressing mental health awareness in the upcoming 2025 season. For the first time in league history, three consecutive weeks will be dedicated to “Raise Awareness for Mental Health Games,” which will be held in Washington, D.C., Phoenix, and Los Angeles. This initiative reflects a growing recognition of mental health issues within the sport, moving beyond prior efforts that included only a single awareness game in the previous season.

The Los Angeles Rams will kick off the initiative on November 23, 2025, when they host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. This game will feature a pre-game panel with leaders in athlete mental health, supported by four national non-profit organizations, including the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the American Psychiatric Association Foundation.

Following this, the Washington Commanders will hold their second annual mental health awareness game on November 30, 2025, against the Denver Broncos. The event will also include a panel discussion focusing on youth mental health and sports, featuring various experts and former athletes.

Lastly, on December 7, 2025, the Arizona Cardinals will host their inaugural Raise Awareness for Mental Health Game against the Rams. Similar to the other events, a pre-game panel will be part of the program, addressing the importance of mental health awareness and support.

These games signify a cultural shift within the NFL, as teams begin to prioritize mental health discussions alongside athletic performance. By leveraging their platforms for awareness, the league aims to reduce stigma and foster an environment where mental health is openly discussed and supported.
