The Recording Academy has announced several rule changes for the upcoming 2026 Grammy Awards, notably introducing a new stand-alone category for Best Album Cover. This decision follows significant discourse surrounding the album cover unveiled by singer Sabrina Carpenter for her upcoming release, "Man's Best Friend."
In addition to the new category, the Academy will merge the existing Best Recording Package and Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package categories into a single Best Recording Package category. The last recipient of the Best Recording Package award was Charli xcx for her album "Brat," known for its distinctive cover art that gained popularity within pop culture.
Harvey Mason Jr., CEO of the Recording Academy, emphasized the importance of adapting the Academy's rules to better reflect the current music landscape and to recognize a wider array of creators. Carpenter's album is expected to qualify for the new Best Album Cover category if it is released on its scheduled date of August 29, just before the Grammy eligibility period closes.
Other changes to the Grammy structure include the addition of a Best Traditional Country Album category, while the existing Best Country Album category has been renamed to Best Contemporary Country Album. This year's winner of the Best Country Album award was Beyoncé for her album "Cowboy Carter."
Additionally, the Best New Artist category has been revised to allow artists featured on previous Album of the Year nominees to qualify, provided their contributions do not exceed 20% of the album's total music.
The 2026 Grammy Awards ceremony is set for February 1, with nominations to be announced on November 7.
