NBC News starts layoffs before MSNBC separation

NBC News initiated a significant round of layoffs as part of its ongoing separation from MSNBC. Reports indicate that more than 100 employees are expected to be affected by this decision. Affected staff members have been summoned to meetings to receive information about their employment status.

The NewsGuild of New York, representing approximately 6,000 media workers in the region, expressed discontent with the layoffs, criticizing the decision to reduce the workforce at lower levels rather than addressing management restructuring. Susan DeCarava, president of the guild, emphasized that the layoffs undermine the contributions of employees who are integral to NBC's success.

This move comes as NBC prepares for MSNBC's complete operational independence, which is scheduled to be finalized on October 20, 2025. Historically, MSNBC has relied on NBC News for its news-gathering and operational support. However, as part of a corporate reorganization announced by Comcast last year, MSNBC will become a separate entity, now referred to as Versant.

Recently, staff members from NBC News who accepted new roles at MSNBC have transitioned to their positions, further distancing the two networks operationally. Following October 20, MSNBC will cease participating in NBC News-led editorial discussions and meetings, marking a significant shift in their long-standing relationship.

NBC did not provide immediate commentary regarding the layoffs or the restructuring process. The developments at both networks signal a pivotal change in the corporate landscape of media operations as they adapt to new business strategies and organizational structures.
