MSNBC, the news network known for its liberal audience and prominent figures such as Rachel Maddow and Ari Melber, is set to undergo a significant rebranding. The network will be renamed My Source News Opinion World, or MS NOW, as part of its separation from NBC following a corporate restructuring by NBC Universal. This decision, which will take effect later this year, includes the removal of the iconic NBC peacock logo from its branding.
The name change comes after NBC Universal spun off several cable networks, including MSNBC, into a new entity called Versant. While other networks like CNBC will retain the “NBC” name, MSNBC's new identity aims to establish a distinct brand that reflects its independent news operations. MSNBC President Rebecca Kutler acknowledged the challenges associated with such a significant shift, noting that the decision was made after considerable discussion among staff.
The relationship between MSNBC and NBC News has been complex, with MSNBC often criticized for its overtly liberal stance, leading to tensions over brand affiliation. Notably, President Donald Trump has referred to the network as “MSDNC,” underscoring the perception of partisanship in its reporting. Despite the rebranding, some NBC News personalities have transitioned to MSNBC, indicating a continued blending of resources and talent across the news divisions.
Maddow expressed optimism about the changes, suggesting that the network will now be able to prioritize its own reporting without competing for resources from NBC News. This transition marks a new chapter for the network as it seeks to establish its own identity and editorial direction in the evolving media landscape.
