Matt Damon credits gluten-free diet for weight loss during 'The Odyssey'

In a recent appearance on the "New Heights" podcast, actor Matt Damon discussed his weight loss journey for his role in the upcoming film "The Odyssey." Damon indicated that he achieved a return to his "high school" weight by adopting a gluten-free diet, which he attributed to his training regimen and the direction of director Christopher Nolan, who sought a lean physique for the role. Damon reported that he dropped from a weight range of 185-200 pounds to 167 pounds.

However, nutrition experts caution that a gluten-free diet may not be a universally effective strategy for weight loss. Registered dietitian Shelley Balls noted that, unless individuals have celiac disease or non-celiac gluten sensitivity, eliminating gluten can lead to the loss of healthful foods from one's diet. She emphasized that effective weight loss is contingent upon maintaining a calorie deficit and that there is no conclusive evidence supporting the notion that gluten-free diets inherently promote weight loss.

While some individuals, like Damon, may experience success with a gluten-free approach, Balls and other experts suggest that a balanced diet, including whole grains, may be more beneficial for most people. They recommend focusing on a variety of nutrients, such as fiber and protein, and suggest that replacing refined grains with whole grains can support overall health and aid weight management.

Dietitian Bonnie Taub-Dix highlighted the importance of sustainable eating habits over quick fixes, warning that gluten-free processed foods can still be high in calories. She reiterated that cutting gluten alone is not a guaranteed weight loss solution, as individuals may still consume high-calorie gluten-free options. Ultimately, experts advocate for a mindful approach to eating that prioritizes balance and nutritional quality.
