In recent years, critics have been expressing their weariness with the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This sentiment has extended to the latest Marvel series, Secret Invasion, which stars notable actors such as Samuel L. Jackson, Don Cheadle, and Emilia Clarke. Unfortunately, the series has received the lowest critic score for a major Marvel series since Netflix's Iron Fist.
Currently, Secret Invasion holds a 63% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from 121 critics, along with a 73% audience score. While technically considered "fresh," this score is quite disappointing when compared to other Marvel TV shows. When ranked on a list, Secret Invasion falls below the likes of Ms. Marvel, Agents of SHIELD, Daredevil, Loki, Hawkeye, and WandaVision.
The series seems to have missed the mark in delivering the promised super serious spy drama. The storyline revolves around Nick Fury facing an invisible threat that only he seems to care about, which fails to engage viewers. Additionally, the occasional appearance of characters in full green scaly face prosthetics disrupts the intended tone. While the comic storyline was expansive with numerous characters involved, Secret Invasion seems limited in scope.
Marvel TV has been inconsistent in terms of ongoing series, making it difficult to keep track of what will continue and what won't. While Loki has a second season confirmed, WandaVision won't return but will have a spin-off called Coven of Chaos. Falcon and the Winter Soldier is transitioning into Captain America 4, and there are uncertainties regarding Moon Knight, Ms. Marvel, Hawkeye, and She-Hulk.
Secret Invasion appears to be a one-off six-episode production that might have fared better as a movie with a higher budget and more involvement from main heroes to support Fury. The Skrull storylines in the comics were expansive and filled with twists, but it seems unlikely that the series will have such mind-blowing revelations. The only real options for Skrull characters in the series seem to be Don Cheadle and Fury.
While it remains to be seen how the rest of the series unfolds, the initial reception of Secret Invasion has not been favorable. As critics and audiences continue to voice their opinions, it will be interesting to see how Marvel responds to the feedback and whether they make any adjustments to future projects.
