Marvel's 'Fantastic Four: First Steps' earns $118 million in domestic opening

In a noteworthy development for the superhero film genre, two major releases have recently achieved significant box office success, suggesting that the so-called "superhero fatigue" may not be as pronounced as some have claimed. Most recently, Disney and Marvel's "Fantastic Four: First Steps" debuted to an estimated $118 million in ticket sales over its opening weekend, following the earlier release of DC’s "Superman," which also surpassed the $100 million mark.

Industry experts, including Paul Dergarabedian of Comscore, emphasize that strong filmmaking can still attract audiences to theaters. "Fantastic Four: First Steps" has contributed to a global weekend total of approximately $218 million, with an additional estimated $100 million from international markets. Analysts suggest that this film could revitalize interest in the Marvel franchise, particularly after a series of mixed performances from other recent releases.

Historically, Marvel has faced challenges following the success of "Avengers: Endgame," with some films underperforming critically and financially. Notably, while titles like "Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 3" and "Deadpool & Wolverine" drew audiences, others such as "Captain America: Brave New World" and "The Marvels" did not achieve comparable success. Furthermore, the Rotten Tomatoes scores for several recent films have fallen below the franchise's previous standards, with five films rated below 67% since 2019, indicating a notable shift in critical reception.

However, "Fantastic Four: First Steps" has managed to secure an 88% "Fresh" rating, hinting at a potential recovery for the franchise. Analysts view this trend as a sign that focusing on quality rather than quantity could be a successful strategy for Marvel moving forward, as they seek to re-engage both dedicated fans and casual viewers alike.
