Lorne Michaels discusses 'Saturday Night Live' cast changes at the Emmys

Lorne Michaels, the executive producer of "Saturday Night Live" (SNL), recently spoke about the show's notable cast turnover and its relationship with the social media platform TikTok. Speaking to Nischelle Turner on the Emmys red carpet, Michaels noted that bringing in new talent from diverse backgrounds and generations has always been a part of SNL's strategy for renewal. He emphasized the importance of maintaining a young audience, a demographic he believes has been increasingly influenced by TikTok.

The recent departures of several cast members, including veterans Ego Nwodim and Heidi Gardner, have generated considerable attention. Other exits include Michael Longfellow, Emil Wakim, and Devon Walker. Despite these changes, SNL's 50th anniversary season was the most-watched in three years, with viewership boosted by the ongoing election cycle.

Michaels acknowledged that while losing cast members can be challenging, it is also a necessary aspect of the show's evolution. He expressed enthusiasm for the new performers being brought in, stating that "change is good." This sentiment aligns with SNL's long-standing tradition of adapting to the times, which was also reflected when Michaels accepted an Emmy award for the show's 50th anniversary special, recalling that he received his first Emmy for SNL nearly 50 years ago.

Looking ahead, the 51st season of SNL is set to premiere on October 4, introducing new cast members Veronika Slowikowska, Tommy Brennan, Jeremy Culhane, and Kam Patterson, alongside writer Ben Marshall. As the show continues to evolve, it aims to blend its legacy with fresh talent, maintaining its relevance in the ever-changing landscape of entertainment.
