Lilo & Stitch and Mission Impossible lead a busy Memorial Day weekend

This Memorial Day weekend has seen significant box office success, highlighted by the release of Disney's live-action adaptation of “Lilo & Stitch,” which garnered an impressive $145.5 million in North American theaters. This figure marks the second-largest domestic opening of the year, following the success of “A Minecraft Movie.” The film is a remake of the beloved 2002 original, which has maintained a dedicated following over the years.

In a notable second place, Paramount Pictures' “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” achieved a franchise record with a domestic total of $63 million. This installment features Tom Cruise in what is likely his final portrayal of the character Ethan Hunt, contributing to its significant box office performance. The film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie, also excelled globally, ranking as the top earner with $127 million worldwide, while “Lilo & Stitch” followed closely with $111 million in global earnings.

The previous entry in the franchise, “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” opened to $80 million during its July release, setting a record for the franchise at that time, though it fell short of broader industry expectations with a subsequent three-day weekend total of $56.2 million.

As audiences continue to flock to theaters, these latest releases reflect a strong interest in both established franchises and nostalgic remakes, contributing to what may be a record-breaking Memorial Day box office weekend.
