Lance Bass reveals misdiagnosis of Type 1.5 Diabetes

In October 2024, Lance Bass, known for his role in the boy band *NSYNC, opened up about his experience with diabetes during the HLTH USA 2024 meeting in Las Vegas. Bass initially received a Type 2 diabetes diagnosis five years ago and began taking medications, but they were not effectively managing his blood sugar levels. After extensive research and consulting with multiple doctors, Bass discovered he actually had Type 1.5 diabetes, also known as latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), which combines characteristics of Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.

Type 1 diabetes involves the immune system attacking insulin-producing cells in the pancreas, while Type 2 diabetes is characterized by decreased insulin production and cell responsiveness. Type 1.5 diabetes progresses more gradually than Type 1 and is often misdiagnosed as Type 2 due to its similarities with both types. Bass now works with Dexcom, a company that manufactures continuous glucose monitors, to raise awareness about diabetes and the importance of monitoring blood sugar levels.

Bass utilizes the Dexcom G7 CGM system to track his blood sugar levels continuously and adjust his diet accordingly. By monitoring the effects of different foods on his blood sugar levels, Bass can better manage his diabetes on a day-to-day basis. Dexcom's Executive Vice President and COO, Jake Leach, highlighted the benefits of CGM beyond diabetes management, as it provides valuable insights into metabolic health.

Despite some controversy surrounding the classification of Type 1.5 diabetes and whether it warrants a separate designation from Type 1, Bass remains focused on managing his condition and advocating for diabetes awareness. His journey serves as a reminder of the importance of proper diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring in effectively managing diabetes.
